Partly because it's just the way it worked out and partially because the newer recommendations are to gain a bit less these days. It became even more complicated when we found out my son is allergic to corn and eggs. I can spend hours at the store reading labels (there is no bold lettered warning for corn, sadly, like there is for egg) and calling companies to learn more about a specific ingredient contained in their foods. I spend a lot of time thinking about and dealing with food. And still, I frequently find I need inspiration when it comes to getting a weeknight meal on the table that doesn't leave me exhausted or take too much time away from my family. pOften, I turn to food blogs. The food blogs that are my favorites (like the Kitchens, both a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://steamykitchen.com/Steamy/a and a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://smittenkitchen.com/Smitten/a) lure me with their imagery. I love the macro shots of ingredients and the stunning presentation. But, I often find that most of those recipes are better left for weekends when I have more time, energy and ambition. I still love to gaze at those blogs longingly throughout the week, however, because they inspire me to keep cooking rather than bustin' out the boxed mix. /ppMost of the food blogs that I find helpful for planning my weeknight meals are those written by other parents who keep it simple and real. a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://www.5dollardinners.com/Erin Chase at $5 Dinners/a not only cooks easy meals, but they're easy on the wallet, too. I find a food blog especially helpful when the author talks about the food she's really feeding her family, like over at a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/The Pioneer Woman Cooks/a. I like it when I can find the best of both worlds in a food blog, like the way Stephanie Gallagher doesn't hesitate to use a a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://kidscooking.about.com/b/2010/03/02/savory-pies.htmpre-made pie crust in this meat pie or quiche/a, but takes a a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://kidscooking.about.com/b/2008/03/27/crockpot-macaroni-and-cheese-recipe.htmsimple dish like mac and cheese/a and jazzes it up with some gruyere and asiago cheeses, making it palatable for toddlers and grown-ups alike. /ppSometimes I learn a little something while I'm on the hunt for recipes, like when I read the a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://whatscookingblog.com/What's Cooking Blog/a. It covers so many food-related bits from improving school lunches to cooking in ways that can help save the planet. Considering some of the recent releases about increasing trends in prematurity and cesarean rates, it was nice to see that home and other out of hospital births are on the rise for low risk women. Here are some of the findings from the study:/p ul li Out of hospital birth comprised about 1% of all births. Two thirds of these births were at home and about a third at birth centers.P li Home births increased by 5% in 2005 and stayed the same in 2006.P li Home births were less likely to have preterm births and multiples. (Planned and unplanned are included in the data.)P li 61% of the home births were attended by midwives, which is up from 43% in 1990.P li Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) births may be under reported, in all births, because of how these births are coded. /ul pP/p pWhile many will be tempted to say that this increase is due to the efforts of a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://www.thebusinessofbeingborn.com/trailer.phpThe Business of Being Born/a and a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://www.thebigpushformidwives.org/The Big Push for Midwives/a, these were not yet available for the years when this data was compounded. I think that when we see the influence that they have had in the years since their campaigns began we will see the numbers of home births and a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://pregnancy.about.com/od/birthcenters/a/birthcenters.htmbirth center births/a rise even more for low risk women.Pbr / Home birth is certainly not for every woman. It is best for low risk women who have skilled care providers, though many women who would like to have home births are not able to find these care providers due to licensing issues in their states, though home birth is legal in all 50 states.
