pSo you're due any day and you realized that St. Patrick's Day is around the corner. It might surprise you that many people actually do choose names for their baby based on what happens near the time or birth or even the conception, so why not choose a holiday inspired baby name?/p

If that's not the naming tradition you use, tell me a bit about how you choose a name. I find it so interesting. I know so many people who pick names out way in advance and yet our last baby took three weeks to get named.../p

Then again, I know that there are others out there who take a really long time to name their babies. I was just reading somewhere the other day about people who change their baby's name after birth and that number was rising. I wonder if people took more time or if they didn't name before birth if that number would drop. Most places don't require you have a name before you leave the hospital, though it's easier on them paperwork wise./p

pThere are a couple of ways to look at pregnancy weight gain:/p

pWhen women fall into the eating for two category, you tend to see larger weight gain patterns in general. In recent years the beliefs about a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://pregnancy.about.com/cs/symptoms/a/weightgain.htmpregnancy weight gain/a have been rethought and changed to discuss the fact that there is such a thing as too much weight gain. New research is also showing us that in addition to there being such a thing as too much weight gain, there is also such a thing as weight gain that happens too early./p
pWhen you look at the break down of the nutritional needs of a pregnant mom, her first trimester needs are not very great in terms of increased caloric intake. Some sources suggest that 100 extra calories a day in this early part of pregnancy is sufficient. This would be more in line with the research that shows that women who had less weight gain per week in the first trimester had the least risk of a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://pregnancy.about.com/od/diabetes/a/gestdiabetes.htmgestational diabetes/a. In fact, women who gained .89 pounds a week or more in the first trimester had a 74% increased risk of developing gestational diabetes. This risk is exacerbated by being a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://www.americanpregnancy.org/pregnancyhealth/eatingfortwo.htmloverweight/a already./p
pOne of the key issues here is that many women don't get in to see their doctor or midwife until past the a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://pregnancy.about.com/od/pregnancycalendar/p/week8.htm8th week of gestation/a, or later. This makes it hard for there to be any counseling on early pregnancy weight gain. Therefore, I'd suggest that the subject of early pregnancy weight gain should be included as a topic for discussion at preconception visits. Another factor to consider is that how we counsel about weight gain in pregnancy is typically to avoid the discussion until there is already a problem!/p
pThink about it this way, at the end of the a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://pregnancy.about.com/od/fetus/ig/Weekly-Pregnancy-Pictures/Fetus--12th-Week-of-Pregnancy.htm12th week of pregnancy/a, the end of the first trimester, your baby weighs only 14 grams. That is the equivalent of 14 paper clips. You simply don't need that many calories to help you maintain a healthy pregnancy in the first trimester. So in the end, use your common sense about pregnancy weight gain./p

There have been some injuries and even seven deaths for infants in slings. Some of these accidents happened when there was equipment failure, like the sling broke and the baby fell out. Other concerns are the position of the baby and ensuring that the baby doesn't lay facing the wearer's body and smother in the clothing of the wearer. No specific sling manufacturer has been called out./p
pWhile I believe that every parent should always consider that any product that you use has limits and risks. The CPSC notes many infant injuries and deaths every year from other products like baby cribs, strollers and toys. All infant gear should be used with a watchful eye, meaning that statement that says Adult Supervision Required means just that./p
pSo don't panic over the new announcement. Slings have simply gained enough popularity that there is now a notable number of people using them. And as that number goes up, warnings for using common sense must be used./pP

With my most recent pregnancy, I didn't gain as much as I had with previous pregnancies. Partly because it's just the way it worked out and partially because the newer recommendations are to gain a bit less these days. You're probably wondering what is going to happen with your a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://pregnancy.about.com/cs/symptoms/a/weightgain.htmpregnancy weight gain/a. Unfortunately, pregnancy is not the time to go carte blanche and eat all you want, you are still subject to adding those extra party pounds. I did read recently that the average weight gain, in general, is one pound over the holidays, but when you're pregnant it's more of making every bite count. It became even more complicated when we found out my son is allergic to corn and eggs. I can spend hours at the store reading labels (there is no bold lettered warning for corn, sadly, like there is for egg) and calling companies to learn more about a specific ingredient contained in their foods. I spend a lot of time thinking about and dealing with food. And still, I frequently find I need inspiration when it comes to getting a weeknight meal on the table that doesn't leave me exhausted or take too much time away from my family.
pOften, I turn to food blogs. The food blogs that are my favorites (like the Kitchens, both a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://steamykitchen.com/Steamy/a and a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://smittenkitchen.com/Smitten/a) lure me with their imagery. I love the macro shots of ingredients and the stunning presentation. But, I often find that most of those recipes are better left for weekends when I have more time, energy and ambition. I still love to gaze at those blogs longingly throughout the week, however, because they inspire me to keep cooking rather than bustin' out the boxed mix.
/ppMost of the food blogs that I find helpful for planning my weeknight meals are those written by other parents who keep it simple and real. a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://www.5dollardinners.com/Erin Chase at $5 Dinners/a not only cooks easy meals, but they're easy on the wallet, too. I find a food blog especially helpful when the author talks about the food she's really feeding her family, like over at a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/The Pioneer Woman Cooks/a. I like it when I can find the best of both worlds in a food blog, like the way Stephanie Gallagher doesn't hesitate to use a a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://kidscooking.about.com/b/2010/03/02/savory-pies.htmpre-made pie crust in this meat pie or quiche/a, but takes a a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://kidscooking.about.com/b/2008/03/27/crockpot-macaroni-and-cheese-recipe.htmsimple dish like mac and cheese/a and jazzes it up with some gruyere and asiago cheeses, making it palatable for toddlers and grown-ups alike. /ppSometimes I learn a little something while I'm on the hunt for recipes, like when I read the a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://whatscookingblog.com/What's Cooking Blog/a. It covers so many food-related bits from improving school lunches to cooking in ways that can help save the planet. And it looks like I can add another bit of cooking inspiration to my feed reader this morning: The folks at Babble have just introduced a new food blog called a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://blogs.babble.com/family-kitchen/The Family Kitchen/a. I really like what I'm seeing so far. Bring on the a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://blogs.babble.com/family-kitchen/2010/03/02/pizza-fingers/pizza fingers/a!
